PEACE BUILDING
After many decades of civil conflict, a peace deal between the warring
factions in Sudan was signed in January 2005. The job of securing this
peace and rebuilding the infrastructure in this large and complex country
poses an enormous challenge to the country's leaders, its people and the
international community. The articles reviewed in this section describe
the efforts and challenges facing the various players in rebuilding Sudan
and ensuring the peace.
Debate on the prospects for sustainable peace in South Sudan from the BBC (webpage)
|
Following the signing of the key Peace protocols in May 2004, the BBC World Service held an online forum to discuss the world-view of the prospects for peace in South Sudan. The questions asked of listeners were: 'Can peace be restored following two decades of war?' and 'Will the deal stick?' The responses, many of them from members of the Diaspora, indicate a general feeling of cautious hope that the Naivasha Protocols would be the death knell for war in the South of Sudan. |
