This 74-page report, with a foreword by Dr John Garang, was compiled
by
the UNICEF-supported New Sudan Centre for Statistics in May 2004.
Entitled 'Towards a Baseline: Best estimates of Social Indicators for
Southern Sudan', the report draws attention to the social situation of
people in South Sudan. It addresses issues surrounding population,
health, water, sanitation, education and child rights. The chapters on
water, child rights and education, are particularly worthy of note. According
to the report, Southern Sudan ranks worst in the world for many key
indicators of the well-being of women and children, including rates of
chronic malnutrition, immunisation, antenatal care and primary school
completion. |
